Wrestlemania IX

 

My friends and I just watched Wrestlemania IX. It’s as bad as everyone says it is! Though there were actually two pretty good matches. I liked the Headshrinkers vs the Steiner brothers. Scott Steiner pre-Big Poppa Pump is so funny looking. Mr. Perfect vs. Lex Luger was also good. I also think Razor Ramon vs. Bob Backlund could’ve been good if they’d been allowed to go a little longer. But man, everything else stunk. Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka doesn’t sound bad on paper but it was incredibly slow for some reason. Doink vs. Crush sucked because Crush sucks and nothing happened except for the ending. Ted DiBiase and IRS vs. Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake? Suuuuucked. The Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez is infamously bad, but at least it was funny. And of course, the main event was just a mess. I hate Hulk Hogan. I hate him so much.

Jake Doyle might’ve torn his bicep in the match against FTR tonight and I think I might cry. He literally just got to AEW. He’s had three matches and was starting to build momentum. And now he’s in the ring saying he thinks he might’ve torn his bicep. I really hope it’s not as bad as it could be because the poor guy like just got back from injury and has finally signed to a company that seems like it’s gonna present him as the monster threat he obviously is (I’m looking at you TNA making Jake lose to ENZO). I’m just so sad, man. He’s one of my faves right now. Life sucks. I hope it’s not that bad. Sorry this is a bummer. At least Tommaso Ciampa is here kissing guys on the cheek.

thoughts about Je'Von Evans that i was gonna make a QRT thread but now it's a blog

 

So for those who aren't aware, Je'Von Evans is an EXTREMELY talented 21 year old wrestler who just got signed on to RAW after being on NXT for a while. I've watched him since he was known as Jay Malachi on the independent circuit. I know, in my heart, that WWE investing in its future should include putting time and effort into building Je'Von as one of the next big things. He's young, sure, but at this point the youngest person to ever become WWE world champion is still Randy Orton at 24. Give Je'Von three years of upward momentum, I think he could achieve similar success.

I think Randy would be very supportive of Je'Von taking his title as the youngest ever world champion.

 "WWE view Je'Von Evans as a 'star' but not a franchise player." Now, let's take into account that the only source on this is the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which has a bit of an iffy track record reporting on behind-the-scenes goings on at WWE. But if this is genuinely the sentiment going around WWE creative... that's ridiculous.

When I read that sentence, I assume it means that they think Je'Von is incredibly talented, but not marketable, and my gut reaction is that I think that's probably just racist. Je'Von has a cool look. He's charismatic. He's incredible in the ring. All you need is to figure out a catchphrase that looks better on a shirt than the bouncey boy thing, give him the Jey Uso marketing package, and you're golden. WWE has time and again made the blandest, boring looking white men extremely marketable. I look at Je'Von Evans and I think, that guy's cool. I think a lot of kids would find him cool. They made a damn 6 7 shirt for him, they KNOW kids think he's cool.

The issue is actually not the 6 7 it's the BOUNCEYYYY.

So what's the problem? You can drape Jey Uso in black cultural aesthetics and market him to the moon and back, but you can't market an actual black man? What else could it be? I'm not backstage, I can't know what they're saying, I don't even know if the behind the scenes statement is true, but if it is... I'm sorry, I can't think of an explanation other than racism. And that's really, really sad, because I don't want WWE to waste Je'Von's potential. We'll have to wait and see, I guess, but man. I hope they do right by him.

wrestling that was good last year

I may make another post about the overall media I liked in 2025, but what’s most important is my beautiful huperfixation: wrasslin’. I watched a lot of wrestling last year, mostly AEW, and here are some highlights of things I liked.

DPW Beast Coast and the Surprise MOTY

This is the big one. I went to DPW’s Beast Coast show live in New Jersey and it was god damn incredible. I got so see so many of my favorite indie folks. I got to see Mad Dog Connelly and Dominic Garrini beat the shit out of each other. I got to see Jake Something be the coolest dude ever and Adam Priest and Trevor Lee on levels of toxic yaoi never before seen. I got to see EMI SAKURA VS MEI SERUGA. Literally what more could you want.

But honestly, the biggest surprise for me was Miracle Generation defending their tag titles against Grizzled Young Veterans. And it’s not like I’m not a fan of either of those teams! But compared to tag teams I’ve seen in DPW like Violence is Forever and Speedball x Something, they just never particularly stood out to me. Well now I feel like shit about that because watching this match in person was a god damn electrifying experience. I have never seen hotter tags. Just the pure, distilled essence of what makes wrestling awesome.

I really need to get more into local indies this year. Definitely want to go to some JCW shows.

Cashing In My Harley Cameron Stocks

My favorite thing in wrestling is when I see someone and think “y’know this person has potential everyone should keep an eye on them” long before everyone else does. I was big into the Gunn Club long before everyone realized how fun they could be, and now I am on top of the world because I saw Harley Cameron on god damn QTV and thought “Hey, does she wrestle? I think she could be a great personality.”

AND GUESS WHO WAS RIGHT. Seeing Harley get more and more over, to the point of winning the women’s tag titles with Willow Nightingale (who I also adore) by the end of the year, was such a fun experience. I got a Babes of Wrath t-shirt for Christmas. I love you Harley. Thank you for validating me.

Similar but not exactly the same experience, of course everyone who follows the indies already knew Speedball Mike Bailey was an all-timer, but seeing how easily and quickly they got over with the AEW crowd made me feel so good and happy. I don't know, I can start to feel jaded about "representation" sometimes but seeing someone nonbinary be this good and get this much screen time warms my little heart. Pairing them with Kevin Knight was also a genius choice, it was a great year for tag teams that were kinda just thrown together, Brodido being another one. Speedball my best friend Speedball. Would love commentary to throw in a they/them when talking about him sometimes but I guess you can't have everything.

I'm thinking of some other stuff, but I'd probably need to sit down and really think a long time to get my thoughts in order, and if I'm gonna be making a post a day I can't really do that, so that'd it for now. Wrestling good.
